A step back in time
Our first stop in South America and our only stop in Chile. We stayed here a couple of days to get over our jet lag which was pretty bad – we did travel back in time you know! We laft New Zealand at 16:40 and arrived in Chile at 12:10, four and a half hours before we left – magic!
We’ve come to realize how limited my Spanish is and so few people spoke English including the crazy Chilean lady who owned our guest house. She was so funny though and would continue chatting in rapid Spanish even is you said you couldn’t understand and during the BBQ she continued piling meat on your plate if you wanted it or not – she was great!
We took a wander up Cerro Santa Lucia, a pretty park with decorative gardens located on a hill. We’d hoped to get a good view of the city and surrounding mountains but it was obscured by the smog from the city. We gave up on the view and decided to check out Centro Artesanial Santa Lucia art and craft market before heading to Museo Chileano de Arte Precolombino. It detailed the ancient civilizations of South America which was very interesting but reminded me that we’re not going to Easter Island which made us sad.
Luckily, we were able to console ourselves with our first empaniadas (basically a meat pasty) and completes (hot dogs with the works) which were quite a challenge to order with our basic Spanish. Funny though!
