Freddie the friendly flea
My mum and dad are going to laugh at this, but I have a flea (se llama Freddie)! He seems to like me a lot and shows this by biting me frequently at night. At first I thought it was a mosquito, but the bites only happen at night when I´m tucked up in bed. Last night I saw the little blighter, but it jumped away and disappeared before I could get at it - so it is still somewhere in my room!
I had my second day of spanish school today which went well, but it so intensive it makes my brain hurt! I am trying to learn the past tense, which I have trouble knowing in English!
Yesterday after class I was very diligent and worked at my homework for many hours in a cafe (the best brownie I have had for a long time)
Today, after class I decided to take a trip with some other members of the school to some of the villages outside Antigua.
We first visited a womens co-operative which weaves colourful cloths. It was fascinating to watch the women weave and then to learn some of the significance of the different patterns and colours in the weaving. Afterwards they dressed some of us up in the traditional clothes to represent a wedding - I was the mother-in-law!
The next stop was a macadamia nut farm. They are conducting an interesting ecological experiment on the completely organic farm which intends to keep the gene pool of the macadamia nut open by having 300 different types of macadamia nut trees. They also have various projects to protect the guatemalan countryside from slash and burn agricultural methods and provide a sustainable crop.
Tonight I am not going out to the crazy monkey bar (as I have been doing for the last few nights) as I need to do my homework and perhaps get an early night.
I had better go as Freddie might be hungry!
