I went to Shrewsbury today, it's about 30 minutes by train. And I was very lucky because it was a beautiful day. The train took me through a beautiful landscape with a lot of hills.
Shrewsbury (60.000 inhabitants) is known for its black and white magpie buildings (see pictures) and the fact that Charles Darwin went to school there. The school is used as a library now but a statue of Darwin still stands outside the building. Another well-know person is Charles Dickens, he has visited Shrewsbury several times and stayed in the Lion Hotel.
When I approached Shrewsbury I immediately noticed the number of spires and historical buildings. There are several churches, an abbey (Shrewsbury Abbey) and a castle. The castle is now being used as the Shropshire Regimental Museum. Part of the castle is Laura's Tower, a tower that was especially build to lock in Laura because she talked so much (one of the inhabitants told us. No idea who exactely Laura was, he talked very quickly about a lot of different things. I think he was very proud of his hometown :)
There's a bridge (English Bridge) over the River Severn that leads to Shrewsbury Abbey, the abbey was a bit disappointing though.
Shrewsbury is a great town, there's a lot to see and the visit was definitely worth it.
