my trip down to Barletta started off with an interesting beginning. I was somehow under the impression that the family I was staying with lived in Bari. So when I got off the train in bari I had no idea how to find anyone. Finally after many frustrating phone calls in terrible and Italian on my part, I figured out that I needed to be at the Barletta station, about 45 minutes away. One hour later—I was in the car on my way to their house.
The food was great! Francesco, Rosaria and Mikel where all very generous and were wonderful hosts. Unfortunately the first night I was absolutely exhausted from the full day of travel and I went to bed rather early. The next day I toured Barletta with Mikel and one of his friends. It was a struggle, the lack of translation, however it was a good time. I saw the castle, cathedral and the ocean.
That night I went out and met some more of Mikel’s friends and we went and had pizza in Molfeta. The thing in Italy is that they eat very late. However this was the latest I had eaten since I’ve been here, it was very interesting. I also ate a lot of octopus, more than I will probably have again in the future.
The next day was a relaxing day and I went to tour around Trani. Trani is a beautiful old coastal town. It had wonderful boats in the harbor and a great walkway along the water. Later we went on to see Bari, which is a wonderful city full of life and also right on the water.
It was a great trip, and I am very appreciative towards the Davanzante’s who let me stay in their home!
