wireless-LESS

2009-10-15, Accra, Ghana

for the past 2 days... i didn't use internet at all!!! not that i wanted to do so, but i had to :D there was a problem with the wireless at home, and i didn't go to the office on wednesday (i will tell the details below)...

now, that means, for 40 hours (and that's the exact number of hours, i calculated, seriously), i didn't check my e-mails, i didn't wikipedia/google anything, i didn't do online research, i didn't read eksisozluk, i didn't, i didn't, i didn't :D luckily there was nothing i had to do online other than checking e-mails etc, so it was not that horrible... instead i read and went to bed earlier... but still, if i was given the chance, i would have gladly done a "ctrl+z" to the moment when our internet got messed up :P

anyways, as i said, on wednesday (oct 14), i didn't go to the office, instead i worked from the library of the university of ghana... i wanted to spend the day there to feel like a real researcher; and i am happy i have done so...

the campus is about 45 minutes away (by foot) from our house... and i walked it all, both going there and coming back home!!! i am a little tired of being stuck in the car, so i don't want to miss any of my chances to walk...

it was a nice day overall... for various reasons... for one, i got to see the crazy streets, there were kids who were just so happy to see me (which under normal circumstances doesn't happen at all :D), people just saying hi, and all the happenings of streets... then, it was great to be away from the brain-destroying noise of the air-conditioning and the heart-freezing cold at the office... plus, the atmosphere at the library was great... i couldn't have asked for more...

hmmm, after a fun walk to the campus, i made my way to the library... i found most of the buildings on the campus pretty -at least from the outside; they are low rise, white, with nice entrances... but the library building is a really pretty building with a cozy feeling inside... it has a courtyard and a clock-tower... old wooden furnitures... natural lighting in most of the rooms... and the best of all no air-conditioning!!! instead almost all the doors and windows in the building were open, so there was a breeze :D and i loved that!!!

now, on the research side... it was useful, but i didn’t really get to find as much as i expected; there are not many recently published books, the shelves are somewhat unorganized, the wireless is disabled... on the contrary of the good atmosphere of the building, they don't provide a comfortable atmosphere to study: you are not allowed to take your bags in; so say if you want to take your laptop in, you need to carry it in your hands... and for me that's horrible, because i like to have lots of pens, papers etc etc when i study...

so, it was painful until i got the books i need from the shelves and found a nice corner to read, but afterwards was great!!! ohh, there also is a bookshop next to the library... i bought "alice’s adventures in wonderland" and "through the looking-glass" (which i learnt to be the sequel of alice -i never heard about it before)... yeah, i read alice when i was a kid, but let's see what i will think this time :D

by the way, we have a full house again!!! ruby –our new roommate from kenya- arrived 3 days ago... i love having roommates :D she obviously have been working for the nairobi office of the company, but transferred here... she has temporarily worked in the ghana office before, so she is not a "real" first-timer as i am :D

well... that's all folks!!!
