Like Lovina, when we arrived in Candi Dasa we followed the nearest local to the first accommodation he showed us. Once again, this turned out to be a good move because not only did we get the cheapest accommodation around but it was a lovely little beach hut set in a pretty garden and included an excellent breakfast.
So, after a slow start (thanks to my recovery from terrible stomach ache) we didn’t really speed up. We chilled out outside our hut, swam in the sea a little, enjoyed pretty sunsets and visited the local lagoon that is full of fish, lily-pads, dragonflies and cranes.
The only drawback to Candi Dasa is that it has no beach. The local reef was destroyed about 40 years ago and as a result the tide comes right in. In fact, if it wasn’t for the huge breakers they’ve built the town might not be there at all.
The highlight for us here was diving and as soon as I was well enough we were off. We visited a site called The Liberty Wreck in Tulamben. It’s a nice shallow-ish off shore dive and it is absolutely beautiful. The fish and the coral are all so colourful and pretty to look at and there’s so many different species down there. It was excellent and well worth chilling out for a few days to enjoy.
