Cape Town in a nutshell....

2009-08-07, Cape Town, South Africa

Hey guys!

Sorry for the huge gap between stories. Cape Town was wonderful. We drove to Jo'burg (I am trying to learn the local lingo) and flew from there to Cape Town. One of the other scholars, Denise, knew of someone who lived there who agreed to house us for the weekend. Little did we know that this house was in an area called Camp's Bay. The abundance of Ferraris and Mazeratis might give you a good indication of the population that lived there. The house and family we stayed with were both wonderful. The view was breathtaking. Unfortunately, I forgot my USB connection to upload the pictures.

Our time in Cape Town was short, but we spent Friday evening on the beach enjoying the sunset. Saturday, we found an energetic tour guide named Neville. He gave us a whirlwind tour that included Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap (an old Malay and Muslim slave settlement), Sixth District (an old township that was bulldozed during apartheid), three townships with visits to families and a traditional healer, a visit to the African penguins, a drive down the Cape to Cape Point and finally ending at the Cape of Good Hope. It was a full and exciting day.

The flight back was interesting. There was a rugby match in Cape Town (SA vs. Australia). Our flight was full of Afrikaans rugby fans energized after South Africa's victory. There were spontaneous outbursts of laughters, whiskey drinking (again), and a man trying to start the wave, unsuccessfully.

I know that was more than a nutshell, but email me if you want to hear more about the townships or any thoughts about post-apartheid South Africa. I promise that when I have the opportunity, I will upload the pictures that I took from Cape Town.

Coming soon...two American girls suck it up and rent a car and drive to Durban for Indian Independence Day. I will let you know how it goes. The first leg of the journey was successful and we reached Durban safely in our little rental car....
