Internet in Kruger Park, with Hyenas, Bats and much more: Skukuza Rest Camp
We left Satara and decided to go to Skukuza and use the Internet to catch up on our travel journal, blog and e-mails. It is like Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park. There is an airport, several lodges nearby and lots of accomodations. The main cafeteria, park shop and Internet cafe are situated near or overlooking the Sabie River.
We used the Internet and as we were leaving I looked under the thatched roof of the outside eating area. I had seen people taking pictures and wanted to see what was under there. Bats hanging from the thatch--according to the literature on the wall they are espauletted bats. So cute for those of us that are bat advocates!
Went back to the camp area. It is really packed in, and they do not have as many kitchen/ablution areas as the other camps seem to have. Or maybe they are not situated where you can drive your cooking things over as easily. At Satara and Letaba we would drive the car over to the kitchen area and cook, eat and clean up without having to make several trips for the things we forgot in the car.
After dinner we went walking around and found the Selati Train Restaurant and Museum. Skukuzi Rest Camp is at the location of one of the stops the train made in the early days of Kruger. According to the information, the people were let off the train and they made their own bush camp. It also told of people spending the night in the tree trying to stay away from the predators! Evidently the train company put ladders near the trees at the stops for the convenience of the travelers. What an experience this must have been!
One of the old rail cars is the bar and there is a nice restaurant attached. We may try this out before our stay is over!
