Africa Mystique: Skull and Bones Hanging From a Tree
Want to guess what animal is hanging in the pictures here, and what killed it?
So amazing that Robert spotted it far off the road as Laura drove... Magic!
On this trip, we were enjoying all the wildlife we were seeing but really did want to see cheetah, wild dogs, and more leopards.
On this three month safari we have really been fortunate in seeing lions, spending 45 minutes watching a leopard in Zambia but have yet to see cheetah or wild dogs. We also joke about wanting to see a leopard in the tree with a springbok draped over the limb beside him.
We decided to go the non-paved route to Satara. It of course takes a little longer but sometimes the wildlife is more abundant. We were on paved road part of the time and came up on a waterhole that did not disappoint with the wildlife. There were five lions resting near the waterhole, herons, hammerkop and other birds flitting about. There were zebra and wildebeest in the distance and then a rhino came into view. We watched him as he grazed heading toward the waterhole, and then like a well-trained dog, used the toilet in the same place as he apparently did every day from the droppings we could see with the spotting scope. This done, he walked a few feet further and then plopped down for his rest.
We got back on the unpaved portion of the road and Robert says "Stop and back up, I THINK I see something but its probably nothing." We backed up and then looked through the spotting scope. There was a impala that had been completely stripped of all meat. You could see the rib bones, some skin, skull and horns. What an unforgettable image! So unexpected, so Africa!
