Ngepi Camp fun, Mahengo Game Reserve Wildlife
Ngepi is still one of our favorites! The atmosphere is very relaxed yet the staff are there ready to help if you need something. They have worked very hard recovering from the flood waters and most things are back running the way they were before the flood. There is a picture album that shows what happened during the flood that is truly amazing showing what they had to do to keep things from being washed away.
There is a new dining area that is out over the water that is a truly wonderful place to sit and watch the worldriver go by as you eat. There are still the other eating areas so you can take you pick.
There are some new trails leading to the treehouses that were included in our daily walk. It was always interesting to see what kind of new species of bird we would see as we walked along!
Ngepi fun was in the evening after dinner when we would go to the bar and see who the new arrivals were. There is always an interesting mix of people who have just arrived, are still there, or from some other camp. You can pick up a lot of information about places you are heading or thinking about going to.
To be able to go on a game drive from Ngepi, there must be a minimum of four people. We did three while we were there; one we caught a ride to entrance of park and waited for someone with room willing to share their experience. We got let off at the turnoff to Ngepi and walked back. The second one we went on an organized one from Ngepi complete with Christopher as our guide. It was interesting because they leave out the back way and take you past the villages where many of the workers live. You can also see the tents that have been set up for the people that lost their homes in the flood. The last one was a self-drive with the couple that were camped next to us and invited us to join them.
Mahango is a nice park and has varied vegetation and topography. There is a great deal of bird life to be seen and the sable and roan antelope that are not seen in many other parks. ===================================================== For more on how we travel like this, see www.malonetravels2.blogspot.com
