We awoke to another beautiful blue sky and sunshine. After driving just a little further east on I-90 we then headed north through Pierre National Grasslands. We stopped in the town of Pierre, SD, population 13,900 and one of the very few capitols in the USA that does not have an interstate going through it. At the capitol building we got the self-guided tour booklet and explored on our own. The capitol was built in 1908 and has a grand rotunda and large marble staircase leading up to the House and Senate Chambers. There was quite a bit of stained glass in all of the major areas. It is one of the few state capitols where the Supreme Court still meets in the capitol building.
We then found a hotel where we checked in early and had a relaxing afternoon. Rather than going out we ordered pizza delivered to our room and enjoyed relaxing the rest of the evening too.
