South Luangwa National Park and Flatdogs Camp
We spent over a month in Flatdogs Camp, which is located inside the Game Management Area across the river from South Luangwa National Park.
For the majority of the days and nights we were there in the camp, we were able to see elephants, hippos, vervet monkeys, baboons, monitor lizards and birds too numerous to mention right there in the camp itself.
We also went on some day and night game drives into the SLNP and the Game Management Area near Mfuwe, Zambia.
Unbelievably to us, some traveled the terrible road from Chipata to Flatdogs for just one night, and those folks may have missed the wildlife that walks right through the camp because of the limited stay.
We, however, had heard of the abundant wildlife from cross africa bicyclers we met in 2005, and came planning to stay for a month if it was true. We were well rewarded with many many close experiences with elephants and hippos. Of course at first we were quite scared, but with he help of the Flatdogs watchmen and management, we had few close calls and many many incredible up close sightings.
Though we did not see lion, leopard, or hyena in the camp, we did see them in the park, and one could hear them calling many nights on both sides of the river.
Some of the wonderful wildlife experiences we had in the SLNP and at Flatdogs are pictured here. For more details, see our blog at www.malonetravels2.blogspot.com .
