Ragpickers

I got to go down to the river and clark and I took some stuff over to one of the ragpicker slums. I took a couple pictures, but not very many at all. I hate taking pictures of other people's lives. How would I feel if I were so poor that people came and took pictures of me. There's some little kids there that crack me up. It's the beginning of the Monsoon season, so it rained pretty hard last night for a bit, so obviously there's plenty of huge puddles for the kids to run around and play in today. So while we were driving along trying to find the right place to drop off some stuff for them, I got to see a lot of different things/slums. The river that flows through here is pretty much just one big turd... The sewage, trash, and everything else all flows straight into the river, as well as the bathing and burning of dead bodies.

Public water doesn't always exist, and for a Nepali equivelant to a huge arrowhead bottle, the cost is around $20 USD. They can't afford that obviously. I can see why it is such a big problem that there is no clean water. Lots of people die from diarrhoea because it causes dehydration. (Did I mention that there were 4 doctors in the airport in Kathmandu taking temperatures of every traveler and checking for symptoms of swine flu?) Those doctors would be better used elsewhere...

My thoughts are random when I write on here, but it's because there's so much to take in here. I'm pumped because tomorrow morning I'm jumping on a bus for about 6 hours and going to Butwal to check out, and possibly work with a group that rescues slaves/sex workers and educates families about the problem. The city lies very close to the border of Nepal and India. It's supposed to be pretty hot there, but I'm still pretty pumped to see what happens. Have I ever told you that the greatest adventures in the whole world start out on 6 hour bus rides? (Trust me, just ask Jeff, Rem, or Wong)

Wish me luck. I love immodium AD. I GET GURKHA KNIVES TONIGHT! (That's right Cody, you will be the proud owner of a brand new tool of destruction in less than 10 hours)

Peace

-Adam Hearron
