Leaving home base in Weikersheim, we headed 20 miles north to the big city of Wurzburg, visiting a very impressive and opulent palace known as The Residenz. I took too many photos, but maybe you'll like some of them. After visiting the downtown area, we took in Schloss Wurzburg. "Schloss", by the way, means "castle", and after this European adventure, I must say I was pretty well "schlossed out".
Here's an amusing insight: As we traveled in our Ford vans, we noticed that people would often wave to us with funny expressions on their faces. This seemed odd to us. It turns out that we later came to realize that the preferred method of transport for people with mental disabilities was the same type of vans we were using! Anyway-- back to my narrative...
We retuned to Weikersheim, where we got a tour of THEIR schloss-- enough, already! This was the local populace's way of thanking us for the free jazz concert we were about to give. The concert was outside the schloss, in the chilly early evening, before it got dark.
We got all dressed up in our finest, which meant tuxedos for the guys, even me, although my part was only peripheral. My job was to sell the band's recent CD, which I helped to produce. By the way-- You may not recognize me from that 1991 photo of me there, because that was taken during the 10 year period of time I wore contact lenses; this was also one of my clean-shaven periods, one of many. I finally, permanently settled on the full beard and mustache look a long time ago.
Anyway-- Due to problems with our electrical converters we fried an amplifier or two at this concert! Post-concert revelry included the obligatory rounds of beer at a local pub. This would be our "farewell" to the wonderful Haus der Musik and town of Weikersheim. We would be headed southeast down the Romantic Road for the big Bavarian city of Munich the next day.
