Hi again!
Since last I wrote we have seen a lot and done even more! I'll try to be brief and will add more photos this time, but still need to keep you up to date with the goings on too!
Day 11 saw us pack up from Mt Isa and head to Lawn Hill National Park (Boodjamulla). We have been told how amazing this place was and were certainly not disappointed...thanks to those who advised us to go there! It was a long day of dirt roads, but worth every game of "spotto" and "can I have another lolly Mum". Beautiful campgrounds and more hot showers (complete with frogs and all!)
We went for a short hike the next day to the top of a lookout in the National Park with views like a postcard. Walking along the river bed later we spied our first freshwater crocodile which captured our attention for some time. The kids quickly learned the difference between a "freshie" and a "salty". Then back at our camp area the kids enjoyed a swim in a waterhole...lots of fun.
The next day has to be a highlight of the trip so far...canoeing in the Lawn Hill Gorge. So amazing you just have to see the photos. I could go on, but wont! Just make sure you get there before you die!
Day 14 and we packed up for Burketown. Burketown on the other hand would not be a place I would recommend visiting in a hurry. Unless you want to spend your last $10 on a pkt of Arnotts Assorted Creams!! Refuelled and headed on...to Leichardt Falls. A bush camping ground with views to amaze.
Almost finishing with the worst of the dirt roads, the next day we head off to Normanton. Just as we were about to leave the dirt, we passed a road train going 100mph and ended up worse off with 3 large stone chips on the windscreen. For those who know Grant you will understand the enormity of this event! He kept his cool (relatively speaking) and we continued on. Normanton was twice the size of Burketown...two main shops and a medical clinic! Visited a couple of must see destinations (see photos) and then pushed on to Karumba.
Lashed out on a cabin here for 2 nights which was a refreshing change. Whilst little may be heard about this little fishing town, it also is a must visit place. It's the only piece of Gulf (Carpentaria) coastline accessible by vehicle, and is just wonderful. Fresh King Salmon, Barramundi and 2kg of Gulf Prawns...mmmmm!
The kids enjoyed their time in the cabin and were disappointed when we told them it was back to the tent again for the next leg of the journey...Karumba to Undarra Volcanic National Park. Again, pretty bush camping, but very scenic. Took a hike to the top of an inactive volcano and trekked around the crater rim. More swimming in the pool for the kids and some fun evenings around the communal campfire at the lodge.
Today we find ourselves on day 20 in the Atherton Tablelands, about 80kms inland from Cairns. Some housekeeping at the supermarket and windscreen repair shop, and just another day of "r&r"!! Have even donned the jumper and long pants this evening as the temp has reached a crazy 15 degrees at 10pm.
Still enjoying the XXXX Gold and sunny days. Enjoy the pics and talk soon.
