After breakfast at our base of operations in Weikersheim, we headed southeast 20 miles on the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road) to visit Rothenburg. In addition to the wall and barricades, the buildings have been preserved as much as possible, making this a definite tourist attraction. We planned to give a concert, but it was rained out. We visited the Kriminalmuseum (Criminal Museum), which displayed many medieval means of incarceration, humiliation and downright torture. No, waterboarding was not included!
Here's a story: Of all the interactions I had with the Europeans I met, I can only think of one negative story, which occurred here in Rothenburg (to the best of my memory): I and few others of us entered a small cafe or restaurant to eat lunch and sat in a booth. The Germans in an adjacent booth made a point of getting up and leaving "in a huff". It was explained to us that they disliked Americans, and it had to do with World War 2.
That is the only time I recall experiencing any kind of anti-American attitude. That was back in 1991. Nowadays, Germans may rightly of wrongly dislike the U.S. for any number of reasons, but World War 2 is a distant memory for most and some even have a bit of gratitute for our saving them from communism (sorry, East Germans-- it took a while).
Anyway-- back to the my narrative...
Since I had purchased a new camera just before leaving for this trip and had not had a chance to develop any pictures from it, I decided it would be smart to get some film developed now just to see if everything was O.K. It was NOT. I found out that almost all my photos up to this point were degraded or ruined due to a light leak. So-- I bit the bullet and bought a new camera, a Canon 'Prima'. The instructions were completely in German, but it was simple to figure out anyway. All my photos from then on were of better quality.
The weather cleared up later, which explains why some of the photos seem to show a sunny and pleasant day. I don't recall anything more, except that we returned to the hospitality of Haus der Musik in Weikersheim.
