First of all, I would just like to say..... BOY is it hot here.
Not so much the temperature outside, even though that can get really hot too, but it's the whole "no airconditioning" thing, when you're rounding up 15 kids for bed and getting their fleece p.j.'s on. Yeah, that get's a nice sweat going :)
But anyway, sorry for the not-so-pleasant intro, but we just got done putting everyone to bed so that was the current situation!
Well, as I mentioned yesterday, this morning was the start of the 24 hour orphanage monitoring. Splitting our girls up, we started with a midnight-6am shift, then a 6-noon (mine), noon-6pm, and right now a couple girls are finishing up with the last 6pm-midnight.
My shift went well! The babies were very tired during the 6 hours I monitored (which is completely understandable, when the previous monitor showed that they woke up every 30 minutes during the night hours), so they usually weren't too fussy once the mama's fed them and put them down. Today we monitored Baby A, which is the new borns-6months. The youngest we have in there right now is 3 weeks old. Adorable.
So all I had to do during my morning shift was literally: sit, watch, and write down comments about what the babies ate, when they ate, when they were changed, cried, slept, fussed, etc. Basically everything! But it wasn't bad.
HOWEVER. I think the mamas weren't quite clear on what our objective was and why we were only watching. Because man, were there some weird glares shooting towards the volunteer's way today. After about half the day, all of the sudden almost none of the mamas were doing any of their jobs. They must've thought, "Well, if you're going to sit there and do nothing, so are we!" So tonight was a little rough. The mamas seemed to disappear, leaving 6 of us and 2 mamas with 53 kids. Really? Really. It was one of the most hectic nights I've experienced so far.
There's a sweet 2 year old girl named Deborah, in Baby C. Deborah has Cerebral Palsy, so she's completely reliant on other people to feed, change, bathe, help sit up, etc. So tonight I fed, bathed, changed, and put her to bed. She's such a sweetheart. But taking care of her left 14 other tyrants runnig around naked haha. It was pretty eventful, if you can imagine. It makes me wonder what the workers do during the school year when there are hardly any volunteers serving here....
Tonight we were served a volunteer meal, for about $2. It was pretty great, they made us these breakfast burrito-type things called Rolex's. Fantastic :) It was a nice way to end a crazy night.
Tomorrow I'm in Baby B from 8-1, then we're taking some of the kids to town for an outing.
Love you all.
God is Good,
Linds
