We were introduced to more Kiwi ingenuity today: the marijuana farmer and his fake police helicopter and the gate closing device. Leaving Lake Tekapo we were told the story of the collie dog, they have a big tribute to the dog for helping with the herding, were it not for this dog they wouldn’t be able to farm sheep as well as they do.
We had our longest drive today to our next destination, beautiful Lake Wanaka where we stayed for 2 nights. Our outing today was a hike to the Rob Roy Glacier. This excursion was the most breathtaking I have ever had of all the places I have seen. The hike itself was a couple of hours each way, but the journey was magnificent and easily where I could roll into a ball and die happy being in such beauty. The colors: greens, gold, yellow, black, white, blue. There’s a huge valley with a river running though it – bridges, grass, snow. It was so much to take in! One day we’ll go on a true trek. New Zealand is known to be a trekkers paradise and now I can see why. On the way back, D tried to get a photo and nearly fell off the cliff… That would have been terrible but makes for a funny story. The glacier was huge, hanging off the top of the mountain with a great handful of waterfalls. We brought our lunch up with us for a picnic. Apparently I was the first to bring a meat pie up there. Mmm, cold meat pie.
I’ve never considered myself old or unfit by any means, but we were having sincere issues keeping up with the other two in our group. I trailed behind a lot because we only brought one pack between the two of us and I decided to take the load – mental note, always bring 2 packs and share the load.
NZ is also known for their venison, we stopped by a farm to check them out. Every time we would drive by they would all stare, 200 of them…staring at you. Creepy. It’s Day 4 with our group and I’ve already finished a book that I brought, Outliers. Great book, but if you’re traveling long totally bring longer reading material.
Found out today that our mate, Dan from England, took 30 hours to get here! 4 stopovers! YUCK!
