So we got into Uganda safely this morning at 720 local time. Phoenix is 10 hours behind, so technically I am writing from the future! Once we landed and got our visas (I met up with my peeps in a London queue), we headed to the Backpackers Hostel in Kampala. We dropped off all of our gear, had breakfast and then headed to the Embassy to talk with the Foreign Services Agent for Education in Gulu district (our FINAL destination - tomorrow). I could'nt sleep on the planes so I am in exhausted dilerium. No joke, I had to leave the meeting because I was nodding off and napped for 10 minutes in the lobby - such impressions I leave. Then we went to a secondary school in Kampala - a great school for this area, but nothing you can imagine - there are 120 students in a classroom; this is just insanity. Note: we will not be team teaching in Kampala, rather we are headed to Gulu, a six hour drive north, where they have fewer resources than Kampala. I took pictures of the heinous stacks of homework these teachers grade - we truly have NO idea. I will upload the pictures as soon as I get to a computer to accepts a flashdrive (probably not till next weekend). After our time at the school we walked to the Hostel (about a block away), gathered our gear and headed further into town to exchange money and get any last minute supplies. The driving here is out of this world, if you can even imagine - we have James who is fabulous, but just imagine narrow roads, no markings for lanes, no lights and boda bodas (smaller motorcyles) zigging in and out of everything (seriously centimeters from being hit) with passengers on the back of them as pedestrians roam in and out of the streets as well! After market time we headed back to the Hostel regrouped and went to have dinner. It was amazing, there is a lot of Indian and Turkish cuisine influence here in the capitol. I am in pain from fatigue and need to get onto my skinny mattress underneath my net. The other teachers are great and tomorrow I will be finding out more about my assignement - we have a week of orientation and start our actual work next week. I won't have internet until next weekend (hopefully) and will send more then. Pardon the rush, but I really have to go nigh night! Sash
