We arrived at our hotel where they had the three of us booked into one room, which is fine, but there was only one bed! This is the first problem we’d had with our hotel bookings so really can’t complain. A quick pone call back to England and was all sorted all in less than half an hour. We were recommended by the hotel staff to go to Clarke Quay, which was quite a walk took us about ¾ of an hour. And where did we find to eat – Hooters, yes a genuine American eatery. We then walked back to the hotel this time only took about 20 minutes, something to do with the map-reader, and no it wasn’t me!
It was another early morning as we were going on a trip round Singapore. Our first stop was to the Merlion, which was quite spectacular; this was followed by a visit to a towist temple, a Jewellery factory – yes I did buy a pair of earrings! It was then off to the National Orchid Gardens this was lovely if only it wasnt so blooming hot and humid. The final stop was to Little India; this was very much like Chinatown, full of shops with people trying to sell you something! That was our last stop before being taken back to our hotel. Gareth then wanted to go back to Clarke Quay to take some photos. We couldn’t hang around too long as we had an evening trip to the Night Safari. This was very entertaining and after our trip round on the tram our guide took us on a walking tour of the Park, well when I say walking tour it was more of a route march as we followed our guides cheery “come-a-long,” which believe me by the end of the night I would have cheerily throttled him, as he bounded from Leopard to Flying Squirrels and back again. A very enjoyable experience although a late one.
Our last day, we checked out of our hotel room and stored our luggage before heading out to Chinatown, where I managed to find my charm. On leaving we hailed the first cab, which came along. It was admittedly smarter than the other cabs with screens on the rear of the headrests; we’d been in the cab about 2 mins when the cab driver asked if we wanted to sing karaoke no said me and Gareth, yes pipes up Eleanor so her and the taxi driver sang Achy Breaky Heart, which had me and Gareth in hysterics, this was then closely followed by Eleanor singing Country Roads, as we arrived at Raffles, our destination, he handed Gareth a card saying he was the only karaoke cabbie in Singapore, and we found him – oh weren’t we just the lucky ones. Once in Raffles we headed to the Long Bar and ordered our Gin Slings, we sat at the table drinking our Gins and eating Monkey Nuts and throwing the shells on the floor, as many had done before us, and probably will do for years to come. We then walked to Orchard Road where we had lunch and I could do some more shopping. It was after lunch that we then headed back to our Hotel and then subsequently to the Airport and home.
