Plan: Leave backpacks in a Venice hostel to pick up before catching a night train
Unexpected problem: Backpacks become infested with a BILLION ANTS.
Plan: Do laundry.
Unexpected problem: Hostel provided laundry service doesn't actually know how to do laundry and hence ruins all of your clothes. (this didn't happen to us, this happened to Heather and Kristin. It wasn't pretty.)
Plan: Go to a garden in Rome on Easter.
Unexpected problem: Garden is closed on Sundays and Holidays, hence, doubly closed.
Plan: Take a train from Salzburg to Paris
Unexpected problem: Eurail pass doesn't cover nations that you pass through on the way to other nations, so evil German ticket collector makes you buy a new ticket and laughs at your pain.
Plan: Take the handy 3:30am bus that goes straight to the Brussels airport from Bruges in order to catch a 6:30 flight.
Unexpected probem: "We haven't seen that bus in a while." -Ticket lady (We're sleeping in the airport tonight.)
Plan: nap in the room before having to sleep in the airport.
Unexpected Problem: There is a backpack in the room that is ringing. Lydia thinks that it is an alarm, I'm fairly sure it's a bomb.
So yeah. Pretty much from my experience travel is full of unexpected difficulties. My favorite is still the backpacks becoming infested with ants though, I mean, how can one foresee that? One cannot.
This is totally not meant to end our trip on a sour note. I'm not sour at all! I saw Christ's blood today! And a Michelangelo! (by that I mean a sculpture not a ninja turtle) And I ate Belgian Waffles with chocolate! So no, I'm not unhappy, I just want to share my knowledge with you. Sometimes, in travel, things go wrong in ridiculously unexpected ways.
I'll be back in the UK tomorrow, tired, but well fed. BEST MONTH EVER.
