Drive from Bay of Islands to Auckland on Good Friday - glad we weren't going the other way. Seems like the whole population of Auckland is heading for the coast! Arrive at hotel right next to Sky City Tower, tallest structure in Southern Hemsphere.
That night I book a table for dinner at the Observatory at the top...Caroline suffers from vertigo! Whoops!
She nevertheless gives it a shot and we arrive at the lift to take us up 220 meters. Sees it has a glass bottom and throws a wobbler. The ever so nice staff however come to the potential rescue and take us to the service lift - completely enclosed. So up we go.
The doors open and we are escorted through the kitchens to the restaurant where a revolving floor is surrounded by fantastic views over Auckland. Unfotunately, Caroline doesn't think so and we have to abandon the thought of staying up there. We did however have a very nice Chinese meal - at ground level!
Do the touristy bits around Auckland - Devenport, Posonby. It's a nice enough city but we think it's got a small town feel despite its size.
Anyway, off to Bay of Islands tomorrow.
