Hello world,

It’s been two months, but I’m back and with a vengeance. Things are doing really well here. I’m moving into my new house at the end of the month. It’s a nicer house with bars on all the windows and doors. The present house I am living in is a dump. The owner has a lot to keep up with the house and she doesn’t want to do anything about it. After a few shouting matches on the phone, her paying for it of course, she asked me to move out. I was alright with that. At first I was going to move back in with a host family, but not the first one because there are too many people living in that house and I really didn’t connect with them. But luckily, I found my own house.

I am starting a first aid class with the Red Cross here in a few days. Every time that I start something, I always get nervous. I’m not sure if people are going to come like they said they would or if they will like it. The first aid class is no difference.

I also started a reading hour on Saturdays and Sundays for the kids. They love it. They come to my house half an hour before the class and wait for me to start the class.

I also have my youth group. It looks like the numbers a slowly dying down and there is little interest to continue. I’m alright with that. The kids are proficient in sexual health and that’s the most important part. Maybe we’ll try and rebirth the class in a few months.

The health committee started strong and then when real work was asked of them, they didn’t come to the meetings, which is weird because they were faithfully going to a women’s club meeting that didn’t do anything. So, before the health committee was disbanded, we started to get pap smears in the clinic. I did most of the behind the scenes work, but they helped talk to the doctor and approach the subject. I didn’t want to talk to the doctor alone because he’s a mess. He thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. You can not tell him how to change anything because he doesn’t believe he should be told anything unless it’s from his boss. So, he doesn’t like me because I organized a meeting with the community and his boss about the clinic and his name was mentioned and not a lot of good things were said by the community of course. I did invite him to the meeting; he had something else to do, so it wasn’t behind his back.

I have so many friends visiting me this month. It’s crazy and expensive. They want to stay in nice places and I can’t really afford that on my salary, especially with the added expenses of moving. But I’m glad they are visiting me because it’s something to look forward to and enjoy instead of always working.

My cat, Lolo is doing well. He is 3months old and spoiled rotten. He likes to bite fingers. I’m trying to get him out of the habit, but it’s not so good. It doesn’t sleep with me at night because it has to catch the mice and cockroaches in the house. So far, there aren’t any more roaches. The mice have all disappeared. Lolo does catch them, but he doesn’t know how to kill them. He has time to learn though. I’m going to vaccinate him against rabies just because he’s catching mice. I don’t want him to get rabies. That would be bad. Most Dominicans don’t like cats, for some reason beyond my understanding. They claim that they have a parasite that you can’t get rid of…they’re talking about ringworm. They claim that you have to clean your house extra careful if you have a cat. My cat did have ringworm, but I did get rid of it with ringworm medication and I don’t let it go outside, so it can’t get ringworm from the ground. But everything else is doing well. I can’t complain. I’m living life just how I wanted to.
