Te Anau provides the ideal base for trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound our planed destinations for the next 2 days. We find a great hotel overlooking Lake Te Anau and hit the Town a very nice, if touristy, town it is too. Some good restaurants and a nice atmosphere around the place.
Our first full day we drive the impossibly beautiful route to Milford Sound itself, which takes us around 2 hours. We are soon on board one of the cruisers sailing toward the Tasman Sea. We hope some of our pictures do us justice because it is just jaw dropping scenery all the way. Unfortunately, it is all over in less than 2 hours but we keep our spirits up with the news that our next days trip to Doubtful Sound is even better!
Milford Sound is every bit as inspiring as the many travelogues tell us!
Next day an early start for the much lengthier trip to Doubtful Sound, around 8 hours. We arrive at the booking station to be met (for us) with disastrous news all cruises are fully booked! W cannot believe it and beat each other up after an argument about why we did not pre-book!
Oh well, we console ourselves as this is the first major disappointment thus far. Nevertheless, bloody maddening!
So we head back into Town, drive around and see some great sights before going for a long walk and descending upon a rather nice lake front bar at which we stay probably longer than we should have.
So: Milford Sound was fantastic and worth every minute spent but we leave with mixed memories of a dream realised and an opportunity missed.
