We arrive in Oamaru for a one nighter still buzzing with the memories of Mount Cook. Immediately, we are brought back to reality. Nothing to not like about the place but not a great deal that ‘grabs’ us either. We find a decent motel, can’t find a restaurant/bar we fancy and have our first Dominos Pizza takeaway!!
Next day however, we come across a real oddity – well to us anyway. We’d not heard of the Moeraki Boulders about 25 miles South of Oamaru. The large spherical boulders up to 7 feet I diameter, lie partially submerged at beach tide line. Complex geological processes have exposed them and they provide a remarkable detour on our journey south – we got some pretty good pictures.
Then on to Dunedin. Strange place we think, eerily stuck in the 80’s – music, fashion. OK we know we aren’t the height of fashion but this place seems to be in a time warp.
We use our time in Dunedin to visit the Otago Peninsula which really is spectacular – includes NZ’s only castle (Larnach) and provides a stunning coastal drive almost around the peninsula only a few feet from the totally unguarded sea. Get some good close up photography of the Fur Seals.
