Safari - Day 5

2009-03-18, Savusavu, Fiji

Today we had a bike ride round savusavu and the surrounding area. we had hoped that it wouldnt be too hot for this but as we set off on our bikes from the guesthouse the sun was beating down!

we started off by doing almost all of the climbing on the route in one huge go - first on a tarmac road and then a rough track. for a bit of excitement we had a chain break in a particularly isolated spot but we managed to get over it and kept going. after a while we descended and we passed through a village and then headed for the coast. at this point the route was supposed to go along the beach - for a long way - and somehow sarah our guide had got the tide times wrong and the water was incredibly high, especially after a full moon the week before. there wasnt really any beach to cycle along and at some points the water was waist deep and we were carrying out bikes on our shoulders!

eventually we made it back to the road where we swam in the sea a bit and then cycled back into town.

our third and last night at the guesthouse. the room was very nice and there were good showers and great breakfasts - $20 each which is about 7 pounds sterling so not really stretching the budget!
