Scandinavia 2008 - Day 10 I awoke Sunday morning completely refreshed, I think the glow from the show the night before, as well as the fresh ocean air were the main factors in my feeling rested and happy. After packing for the day, I rode the metro into town and bought some pastries at a bakery. As I was walking to the National Art Museum I was stopped by two clean looking middle easterners who asked me if I had change for a Kroner note. Thinking nothing of it I began to look for change, but I didn't have correct coin change in my pocket, I was just short a few pennies. They man stuck his hand back out and asked me to look in my wallet for change, I immediately got suspicious. I told them I didn't have change in my wallet (I didn't) but I realized that they were probably waiting for me to break out a stack of cash and they would grab it and run. I said no and took my coins out of his hand and gave him his note back and began to walk away, they followed me briefly becoming more confrontational, but they stopped and walked away once they realized I knew what they were up to. I couldn't believe it. Motherfucking gypsies in Northern Europe, I thought I had left them behind in Italy.
I was now in sight of the Art Museum so I finished my Danish and my coke and walked in. they had a nice collection of statuary in the upper hall, but soon I was in the galleries themselves, where I discovered the lovely collections.
In the afternoon, hungry, I skipped lunch and walked to the Nys Carlsberg Glyptotek. Unfortunately I had taken to long to get up, and even longer at the national gallery, so I didn't have much time at the Carlsberg museum. The collection of statues at the Carlsberg museum are some of my favorite in the world. Each piece was a masterwork full of emotion and beauty. After seeing the works in a hurried fashion (it breaks my heart to not have had more time) I quickly became frustrated trying to find the collection of impressionists. Finally I discovered a small hidden door in the back left corner of the winter garden that was a sky walk over to a new building that was gorgeously lite with natural light. There I discovered 3 floors of very good impressionist art, and much to my surprise, they even had a Corot from my favorite outdoor series of smoky atmospheric sky scenes. It was just minutes until closing time; I caused a small disturbance when I dragged a chair from one corner of the room over to the other corner, and sat there just off to the side of the Corot, but since there were only a few people in the room the guard lady gave me a look and walked away. I sat there basking in its eerie glow until the closing alarm rang, then I slowly got up, put the chair away, and walked out.
Out in front I found a high perch of granite to set on and I just watched the traffic and time go by. Many families were getting off the bus and going into Tivoli, Denmark's largest outdoor amusement park, for a Sunday afternoon outing. Everyone seemed happy and cheerful. Back at the apartment I took a nap until Anders got back with some groceries to make dinner. I opened the wine I brought to let it breath, while Anders prepared the meal. We chatted and he told me some about danish cuisine. Rikke wasn't feeling well so she slept while we cooked and talked music. When dinner was ready we set the table and ate our meal. We stayed up late talking music and drinking good wine and strong vodka. Anders Danish Diner: boil a pot of potatoes. Meat Patties: put minced onions in a bowl with ground beef and an egg, salt, pepper, and paprika. In a pan fry some sliced onions in oil. Add a tiny amount of sugar. When onions are caramelized put them aside and cook meat patties. When the meat is cooked set them aside. Pour in some water into the fry pan and add some beef bullion, scrape the food bits off the bottom of the pan. In a cold cup of milk add some flour and stir completely, pour into pan with beef bullion. When the sauce is done add in meat and onions and serve on top of mashed potatoes.
