Arrived in Port Douglas on 16th February to be blown away by both the place itself and the apartment we’d booked. Port Douglas has to be one of the most stunning locations in the World.
We felt we almost had the place to ourselves, so quiet it was. A small town packed with excellent eateries and great bars. The ‘4 mile’ beach of pure white sand has to be seen to be believed.
Anyway, before we could properly enjoy Port Douglas itself, this was the place we chose to ‘do’ the Great Barrier Reef. We travelled with a company called Quicksilver for a full day out on a pontoon anchored on Agincourt Reef. Again, this being low season, we were fortunate that the boat was less than half-full.
Once on the Reef, the immediate activity is snorkelling apparently so it’s on with the ‘stinger’ suits – lovely full body Lycra body suits to protect against Box Jellyfish! We don’t think the pictures of us modelling these attractive suits do us justice – see what you think!
Whilst everyone else is wearing Lycra, it soon becomes the very last thing on anyone’s mind. As you enter the water suitably kitted out with all the snorkelling gear and see for the first time the coral and the amazing variety of fish, you are immediately transfixed by the shear beauty of nature at its best. As most people say words cannot do it justice, nor can pictures. Absolutely one of our best experiences.
So – seasoned snorkelers now! Fantastic. Maybe next Scuba Diving?
Now the long drive South.
