I think I forgot to mention the skulls hanging on the walls of our Bad Herrenalb hotel. They were so small and had horns... I figured it was the owners of this place that killed the last of the jackelopes. I wasn't able to confirm this before we left however...
After the thermal spa in Baden-Baden, we headed north towards our next hotel located in Worms. On our way there, we detoured to see the Heidelberg Castle in the beautiful university town of Heidelberg. We found our way up through the winding roads to the castle just fine. We even found a close parking spot which seemed too good to be true. I will explain that shortly....
We bought our tickets and we walked through the main entrance and down into the wine cellar. Now this place houses THE largest wine barrel in the world! It was gigantic. There was another wine barrel in the adjacent room which was a bit smaller; however, it would take me quite some time and a few hundred parties to empty the thing. Quite impressive. While we were inside, Scott and I had some cherry cake and I had some Eiswein (ice wine). Very good stuff, but can be a bit heavy on the purse.
From the wine cellar, we walked all over the grounds taking pictures and just enjoying the fresh air. It was still quite cold as there was snow and ice on the ground. The castle, I learned, is surrounded by hundreds of spotlights which illuminate the castle every night. Both of wanted to stay for that, but we still had a drive ahead of us.
Once we were done scoping out the place, I looked down the hill to steal a peak at the car. Oh boy, I was not too excited to see a tow truck sitting in front of our car. We had parked behind other vehicles on the same street and didn't see a problem with it. I yelled at Scott and told him we were about to get towed. I hauled tail down what seemed like a million steps and found the tow truck gone.... but our car was still there! Yay! Disaster averted. Needless to say, we left the city at that point. I figured to tempt Fate twice may not prove favorable for us...
Some interesting side notes... the soap dispensers in our München hotel had the label of "Tricky Ricky". Kinda follows suit with the whole red light theme I guess.
If I had my gun, I'd shoot Dumb-Dumb.
Everyone seems to park on sidewalks here...especially in the older cities. They hurt for parking space because they are unable to expand out. Most parking lots you will find underground. Very tight for the car.
I have only seen two pickups on the road so far. Otherwise, you'll find Audis, BMWs, Opels, Mercedes, some Fords, Porsches, Volkswagens, smart cars, etc.
No ice dispensers here. Europeans like sparkling water. To me, that's disgusting. I have been drinking bier, juice, and Fanta. Healthy combination, I know.
Seems like in the winter, most of the restaurants close down or have limited hours. It's always a guess to find one willing to have guests.
For a few seconds the other day, I longed to have English spoken around me...but then an American song came on the radio and I was fine. Now, I really want to learn German. I'm so backwards.
Time stands still for me right now. It hasn't even been a week yet...and to think we have another week to go!
Next post....Worms. LOL.
