21 hours in all to get here – amazingly, 3 flights, a taxi & a boat (Manchester-London-Bangkok-Krabi-Railay) all on time! Only problem arriving at Krabi Airport, pre-arranged hotel transport didn’t turn up. Wouldn’t normally be a problem, but this included a taxi drive to the coast and then a boat to the hotel – Railay Beach Village – which is only accessible by boat. After a few frantic moments and some choice language, we got a taxi and arrived at Ao Nang to get a boat to Railay (9pm, pitch black). Managed to get hotel to send one for us.
Then it got interesting when the ‘boatman’ told us to take our shoes off and roll our trousers up – some kind of initiation ceremony? No, just that the transport is by ‘long tail boat’ – you have to wade out in to the sea to climb on board a ‘shack with an engine on a stick’. Quite a feat with 2 23kg suitcases and 2 rather heavy holdalls! Turned out to be quite a laugh though – looking at ourselves after 20 hours of travelling wading into the sea with 4 bags in pitch darkness – what else can you do! Only wish I’d been able to photograph it!
Oh, by the way, our hotel is owned by Muslims and guess what? They don’t serve any alcohol!! Oh well, only 6 nights to kill!
Not easy to get internet access hear so updating this as we can. This place is amazing – stunning scenery, hot (90c), Thai people are fantastic!
Yesterday went snorkelling around some local islands – great experience except that I (RN) tore my foot open on some coral! Boat we’d hired had to rush me back to shore to get it seen to. Pretty bad cut, so foot wrapped in bandages and land bound for next few days. Pity, but this area is the place to be if you do get laid up for a while!
All for now, and a few pictures posted.
