2nd Week of Workshop Wraps Up at UNIVO in San Miguel

Hello, Friends,

The best news about our 2nd week of the workshop is that our room is bursting at the seams! We have 15 public school teachers, 6 private school teachers, and 6 English language students. The private school is directed by one of our former participants who had a dream of starting his own school, and now it's a reality. The students in the class aren't sure they will become teachers, but they enjoy practicing their skills with the rest of the group. It's a joy to see English speakers at every level working together to improve their ability to read, write, listen to and speak.

The main project for this week has been for 4 groups to each write and perform a play based on a traditional Fairy Tale. All of our teachers seem to have a "ham bone" hidden away. The purpose is to create English language dialogs, and they've created some very entertaining ones. We've been laughed until our sides hurt:)

The other thing we've worked on this week is keying the activities that we present to the new Ministry of Education (MINED) English language curriculum for middle and high school. It is our goal that each teacher will leave the workshop with a collection of usable activities that will plug into the new curriculum.

Now for a lighter note: we've been kept on our toes this week by the food service people. UNIVO provides morning and afternoon snacks for the participants -- much appreciated tide-me-overs for teachers who have very little money in their pockets. Unfortunately when the regular university session ended last week, the food service office closed. The snacks are now coming from a little restaurant down the street -- theoretically at 2:30 in the afternoon daily. In actuality they arrive any time between 2:30 and 4:00 when class ends. It keeps our lesson plan flexible!!

The team has a busy weekend lined up -- we'll be eager to share it with you!!

Sincerely,
Daphne
