On the 18th October we all got dolled up. Even the boys (ties and waist coasts, very smart) and headed to Belmont racecourse for Irish Day at the Races. The atmosphere was great, with Irish music, food and even some costumes too.
Naturally as we were all feeling very sophisticated we bought a few bottles of champagne and the craic began. The winnings started to roll in much to our joy and I think most of us broke even, which is always good news. A special mention of course goes to the bookie who took a stereotypical view of the Irish punters and when Stephen was placing a bet on a horse for us both she said ‘all the Irish are throwing their money away because they are too drunk to know what their doing’. Stephen was quite annoyed, as he was very sober but she was smiling on the other side of her face when the horse won and Stephen won over $100 and I won $70. He took great pleasure in asking her to repeat what she had said about the Irish when we went up to collect our winnings.
Many bottles of champagne later and we took the party back to an Irish bar in the city and it partied our winnings away.
