Boats, Whales and Submarines

Hi everyone,

Well the good weather is here and the sight seeing is finally back in action. It is at this time of year that you realise why people fall in love with this country, the sun is out, the beaches are packed and there is a BBQ at your disposal every where you turn.

So now that it is finally warm and sunny Stephen and myself decided to spend the day in Fremantle (or Freo as is locally known). It’s a seaside town about 30 mins on the train from Perth City and it is actually were I have been working for the last few months. Although I have been working here I had seen very little of it as I had my little route to the hospital and back.

We got up pretty early and took the train down to Freo from where we got a boat out to see the migrating whales. It was an amazing thing to see, as they are so big and move at such speed (so quick the camera was always 2 seconds behind unfortunately). It was a great tour but I have to admit that I got back in shore just in time before my sea legs gave way :o).

On our way to have some fish and chips (as you do at the seaside) we stopped at the maritime museum to see if it was worthwhile doing a tour. To our disbelief they had a WWII submarine docked that was open for tours, as Stephen was fit to have kittens with excitement we booked 2 tickets and joined a tour of about 6 people. Climbing into it was totally surreal, luckily I could stand up straight although Stephen had to stoop every now and then. There were certain parts of the submarine that held all 64 crew at one time and with the 8 of us in the tour in it felt very claustrophobic. I don’t know how the marines do it I tell you. I was glad to get out into the fresh air in the end but I think Stephen would have quite happily stayed in there all day re-inacting The Hunt For Red October!

All for now,

Mich x o
