One of the great things about Australia is you can get some great wine straight from the source. A little area (about the size of Ireland) about 5 hours south of Perth there is a wine region known as Margaret River famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. It attracts a lot of tourists to the area so we decided to book a wine tasting tour (as I do love my wine, yum)
Michelle, Tracey, Aidan, Donzo and I booked a holiday home for a weekend and rented a car for the trip. When we arrived at the digs we were gob smacked and the superb standard of the house. After a Mission Impossible type scene trying to get into the place by climbing gates, keying codes into keypads and opening safes to retrieve the keys (I was waiting for a retinal scanner to come out from the wall) we got in. the place was amazing with its Wide screen TV, massive beds, walk in showers. There was even a heat lamp in the bathroom after you take the shower. You’ll have to see the photos to see how grand it was.
Let the party begin. We brought our own carryout and sat up til about 5am on Friday night drinking and talking about what’s to come on our trip. The next day was and early start and we had over did it a bit the night before. Not the greatest preparation for a day of wine drinking. Out tour bus arrived at our door and we all hopped on to visit our first winery. The bus was full of wine loving tourists excited about sampling some award winnings wines and then there was us Irish, hungover, chewing gum with the mere mention of alcohol turning us green.
We visited 4 winery’s (of which there are 106 in MR), 1 brewery (known as “an oasis in the middle of a desert” as the owner didn’t like wine), a cheese factory and a chocolate factory. The wine was absolutely delicious, you don’t realise the difference in commercial crap you drink at home until you drink a good quality well made wine.
Donzo the poor lad who had also overdid it last night couldn’t handle the drinking and asked the winery owner if she could make tea as well of which she obliged. You can take the boy out of Ireland....
Margaret River was a great place and one of my highlights of our World tour so far. Great wine, the scenery beautiful, Dad you would love it!! Wish we could of stayed a bit longer but it was back to work on Monday. Pants
