Dear Friends of TEACHER-TO-TEACHER: Alaska to El Salvador,
We're happy to share with you that we're on the ground in El Salvador and ready for another 3-week workshop. Co-Director Dianne Coursey and I (Daphne Hofschulte) arrived at the El Salvador International Airport on Wed. Nov. 19 -- and a miracle occurred: all of our bags arrived with us!! We were very pleased with the Alaska Airlines-Continental Airlines flight. Continental even serves meals to all passengers in coach.
Our volunteers all have arrived safely in San Salvador: Mary Matthews, Marilyn Russell, Becky Snow, April Crosby, and Merritt Helfferich - Fairbanks AK Marion and Mark Hammer - Lake Oswego OR Zach Garinger, Quyen Vuong, Jen Bartimole, Alyssa Moy, Anna Einstein, Matt Lindeman - Peace Corps Volunteers serving in El Salvador.
We had a very successful orientation session today with 17 people present. Our Salvadoran liaisons gave presentations to the volunteers to help us get ready to help Salvadoran teachers teach English to middle and high school students.
The University in San Miguel (UNIVO) sent a van to collect our team, all of our teaching materials and lots of personal suitcases this afternoon. The last box went under my feet, and off we went. We made a couple of stops on the 2 1/2 hour trip from San Salvador to San Miguel to view the beautiful San Vicente valley and volcano, and on the bridge over the Rio Lempo. Now we're checked in to our hotel and are ready to begin the workshop tomorrow. The wireless is working well, and there's supposed to be hot water. What we have is "luke-cool" which is manageable -- it saves water since we don't dawdle.
Thanks for following this journal of our adventures at UNIVO in San Miguel. Be sure to check our pictures!!
Daphne
