Cape Maclear to Salima

Cape Maclear, a very small part of the Lake Malawi magnificence, is where we found Fat Monkeys campsite, literally situated on the “beach” of this fresh water lake.

We arrived on Wednesday the 5th of November and immediately fell in love with the whole setting. Camping beneath mango trees, right next to the lake with electricity, a good bar and restaurant and the best washing up facilities we’ve seen so far.

With remote surroundings one does not find much here, so taking the advice from people in Blantyre saved us, because we stocked up on cash and food. The nearest anything is two hours drive in either direction.

The company at this place is so good, because it buzzes with new visitors every day, and the atmosphere is great! Chill and relax beneath warm skies, cool down with a swim in fresh clear water, and enjoy the day with music from the bar and the most astonishing sunsets you will ever see. There are a few other places situated alongside this stretch of land, including restaurants and internet facilities, and one can also do some diving if you prefer.

We rented a kayak and rowed ourselves to a small island on the opposite side; it was good fun going, a bit harder getting back, because the water was choppy even though there are no waves. This is where I discovered snorkelling and the beauty thereof thanks to the full bellied lake consisting of beautiful, colourful fish and Ferdi’s very patient persistence. Also, there are no crocodiles in this specific part of the Lake, and the locals cannot tell you why, it is just the way it is.

We are moving up towards Salima, but first stopping off at Monkey Bay where we initially wanted to go. From there on, we don’t know as yet, but will definitely rely on word of mouth from locals and fellow travellers passing through, as this seems to provide the best info for the best places to visit.

Cheerio!

Accommodation Rates: 500 Kwacha per person per night for camping.

Tip of the Day:

Only the very bare necessities are available at little town shops around the Lake. We have found that some people pitch up, wanting to buy food here only to find out that there are none available to buy. Keep that in mind if you self cater, otherwise you will have to rely on restaurant dinners!

When coming in to Cape Maclear or Monkey Bay from bigger regions by public transport, be reminded that there are limited travel options available after six in the evening. One does not want to get stuck halfway there without further transport. Plan your day!!
