It was an incredibly moving week and ordination Mass, having family and many friends in Rome for my diaconate ordination on Thursday, October 9th, 2008 in the Basilica of St. Peter. There were 25 of us ordained by an auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee, Bishop William Callahan, who before being ordained a bishop was a spiritual director at our college the year before.
I thank all who prayed for me even if you were not present.
Deacon James Melnick also from the Diocese of Little Rock was one of the 25 ordained and we will together be ordained priests July 11th, 2009 in the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Little Rock by our bishop, Anthony Taylor.
It has been a month since ordination and it has been a tremendous blessing exercising when possible my ‘office’ of being a deacon, a ministry of service. I serve at the altar, I proclaim the Gospel, sometimes giving a homily, and I serve the deprived in charity.
As a deacon I permanently and very publicly made three promises to my bishop who was present at the ordination: prayer, obedience and celibacy.
There are many happy and treasured stories from the week of ordination that I could share but this journal would go on forever. There were also many photos taken but not by me since I was a little occupied at the time.
