Big Sur Camping in the Redwoods, Fantastic Coastal Beauty
Camping in the Redwoods along Big Sur is quite an experience. There are huge redwoods in the campgrounds we usually go to. This time we had an interesting experience when we woke up our first morning.
Robert got out of the tent and then whispered to me, "Laura, there are turkeys out here!" There was a flock of about 20, a couple of them toms puffing out their chests and displaying their feathers. Over the days we were camped, we found that these turkeys are regular visitors to the grounds. The last night we camped, it rained off and on during the night and the turkeys chose to roost above our campsite so Robert was rewarded with the sight of them flying down out of the trees.
We also had some, we believe, acorn woodpeckers noisily pecking away above our campsite. There were also the jays and the crows moving through at various times during the day. The campgrounds we usually stay in on the Big Sur river all have nice bathroom and shower areas but they are not heated and so be warned for those not used to cooler temperatures. It is worth it for the view of the redwoods as you come out and head back to your campsite.
