So, yes it has been too long of a time since I have last written here. I know. I apologize.
If it makes anyone feel better, I have had a world wind past month and half. So mid-September, I was finally liking my site and getting a lot of work done. I started a youth group and I also got grant money that would let me make murals around town about taking care of the environment.
So around that time, Bolivia was imploding. All major highways were blockaded. The national police were called into two large cities to control the errupting violence. Civilians were starting to get violent against the police. The government owned/operated gas production business had a pipeline blown up by civilians. The pipeline fed into Brazil and Argentina. Then the Bolivian government kicked the American Ambassador out of the country. That was when Peace Corps got mobilized to get us out of there before it could get any worse, or before we were officially thrown out of the country.
So I spent 2 of the worst weeks of my life, and no exageration in a center outside of Lima, Peru figuring out what I was going to do next with my life. Imagine leaving your home and work in a matter of days, knowing that you could never come back. That's where I was. Then when I called home, no one understood how I felt. So I finally decided to spend 1+ years in Dominican Republic finishing my service with the Peace Corps.
It was one of the best decisions for me at the time because I needed to have closure with my Peace Corps service and end it on my terms, not on anyone else's. So, I'm sticking with it until my official Close of Service date Oct. 30, 2009.
The Dominican Republic is a big contrast to my life in Bolivia. The people are very open. They will tell you how they feel when they feel it and not feel bad about it. They are also more of a partying people. The island is truly beautiful. The people dress to kill at all times, even shopping in the market. I went to the beach the other day and it felt good.
The only downside is...THE MICE!
They are deadly here. They live in everyone's house. They have eaten my underwear, my computer cord, my retainer and endless amounts of food. It is a mess. I am going to buy 2 cats shortly to combat this problem. Their names will be Murder and Homocide. My public enemy no.1 is now officially mice/rodents. I will do whatever it takes to get them out of my life.
Anyways, here are some pictures of my time here and other places.
I'll try to update more! I promise! At least once a month.
