Up early in the morning with a Shisha (hookah) hangover. Our chartered “Toyota” tour bus picked us up bright and early after breakfast and we headed over to one of the last royal pyramids, the Great Pyramids at Giza which was built for a king in the 18th Dynasty. I didn’t realize there were about 100 pyramids built in Egypt. They say the Pharaohs were making a statement about their own power and perhaps, about the strength of their country.
We rode our fabulous camels by the pyramids and actually got to CRAWL inside a pyramid to see an excavated (empty) tomb. It was exciting to be in the pyramid but frightening at the same time. Limited space, hot and closterfobic, but we did it!!!
We also headed over to the Great Sphinx of Egypt that was truly amazing. Felt surreal that we were there. What amazed me was the limestone material used to build it and each piece that was utilized. It is not brick by brick, but each piece is carved and brought in…. back in the day… by hand.
We went to Papyrus, a store that specialized in the papyrus plant that ancient Egyptians utilized to designate documents written on sheets of it, often rolled up into scrolls with ancient messages.
That night we went out to dinner at a restaurant called “Farhat”, which had traditional Egyptian cuisine, including a pigeon dish that people loved. I took a bite just to try it, it actually tasted like chicken, but the thought of it… freaked me out.
We went back to the hotel and smoked some more Shisha to close out the night.
