Finally, a trip worthy of another journal!

It has now been over three years since we returned from our trip around Latin America and we still look back at it with very fond, although slightly fading, memories. This journal has been great for reminding us of bits and pieces.

I (Sarah) am finally going on another trip that I feel is worthy of creating another journal. I'm only going for a week but it's going to be an interesting week I hope and we'd love for everyone to follow what we're up to, which is...

About a year ago, I got involved with a charity, which a friend of mine - Sarah Noor - was trying to set up. After volunteering for three months at a home for abandoned and orphaned girls just outside Mombasa, Kenya, Sarah decided that she would like to support the children she had met more permanently. She rallied friends and family and, with their help, set up a sponsorship scheme to send some of the brightest children, and those that were most eager to learn, to a private school. There were a couple of reasons for choosing to send them to a private school, not least the fact that state school classes can often have 100+ children in them.

Fast forward to today and Fund for Action Through Education (or FATE) is now a registered charity in England and Wales (registered number 1125401) and Sarah Noor is returning to Kenya for the first time since her original volunteering trip, along with myself and another friend. Sarah and I are the trustees of FATE and we currently have 19 children being sponsored. We're currently working on developing our brand and website with a lovely agency called Mzuri Design. We do have a couple of holding pages if you'd like to read a little bit more about FATE though - www.fateuk.org.

We're going to Kenya on 10th October and will do our best to add a journal entry every couple of days to let people know what we're up to. We hope you enjoy reading them. As always, if you'd like to get in touch, either leave a message in the 'Guestbook' or send us an email. You can also sign up for updates if you'd like to find out automatically when we update the journal.

Thanks and we'll keep you informed.

Next entry: Jambo from Kenya!
