The next leg of our journey was down to the Grampians, visiting the 12 Apostles and travelling down the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne. More goodbyes had to be said before we headed off again. Luckily there were 4 of us from our original Rock to Water group which was great - the 2 of us plus Sarah and Raga. We spent the first day travelling down the Princes Highway to the Grampians. We passed into Victoria, which is our 5th state we have visited in Australia. Our first stop was McKenzie Falls which we walked down to - lovely sight. At the top of the Falls were wild Kangaroos which we got quite close to - so cute! Next was Reed lookout where we did a short trek to The Balconies, the views over the Grampians were fantastic!
The following day we set off early to do another hike at the Sundial area. This was a 2.1km walk and resulted in amazing views of The Pinnicles and Lake Belfield. After this we set off down the Great Ocean Road which looked stunning - huge rock formations randomly located in amongst the waves. Our first stop was the Bay of Martyrs followed by London Bridge then a Gorge walk. Lost stop was the 12 Apostles for sunset. This was absolutely spectacular! They were formed by erosion of the original coastline. They are rock stacks that rise up to 70 metres from the Southern Ocean, there are only 7 of the 12 left standing. Sunset was really amazing as the sun burst below the clouds setting behind the Apostles.
We returned to the Apostles the next morning to see them in daylight, again they looked fantastic as the waves crashed against them! We headed to the Temperate Rainforest for a walk before heading off down the Great Ocean Road. This part was fabulous as we drove on what seemed like a cliff edge. The only problem was our driver who drove so fast round the road we hardly had time to register what we were seeing. He stopped once at Mount Defiance lookout which was excellent as it was quite high up giving beautiful views over the ocean. We then headed on to Melbourne where we spent a few luxury nights with Tracey's friends!
