Iles des Sol - Birthplace of the Inca Civilization

2008-05-09, Copacabana, Bolivia

We left the shores of Copacabana at 8:30 am, and took a ferry, for 2 hrs to the North end of the Island. The plan was that the ferry would drop everyone off on the North side. Then we would hike across the Island to the South side where the boat would pick us up from there.

There were only a small handfull of ruins left, that looked to be (in my opinion) poorly reconstructed.

We paid an entrance fee at the begining and again about halfway through the treck (I guess they knew we wouldn't turn back because our boat was waiting for us on the South end of the Island) And yet again close to the south end of the Island. Very frustrating. Because you are not made aware that they will be charging you 3 times.

The Island itself for me, was a disapointment. It was dry and sparse, rocky and bare. The local children were relentlessly asking for handouts throughout the hike.

The rich, blue waters of Lake Titicaca with the mountains of Bolivia in the background, helped curb the disapointment though.

I guess I can't really discourage anyone not to go. As disapointed as I was, the idea of being at the supposed birthplace of the Inca civilization was reason enough I guess. But, I would have to say that this would be one of those places that I would not care to see again.
