My husband's birthday is at the end of July, when the weather is at its best here in Sweden. As a birthday present to him, I arrange a weekend get-away for us both somewhere here in Sweden. That way, we can treat ourselves to a stay in a nice hotel and restaurant meals, while enjoying a weekend together exploring parts of Sweden we haven't yet visited.
This year he chose the little town of Arjeplog, which is found in the northern 1/5th of Sweden's long and somewhat narrow landmass. He has actually visited Arjeplog several times before with his first wife, now deceased, who had grown up in the area. But, he wanted to re-visit that area - this time through the eyes of a tourist, but most importantly to take a parting glance at old memories so that he could officially close that chapter of his life.
I booked a room for us in a charming historical hotel well in advance, to be sure we'd have a place to stay. To our big surprise, a bit less than two weeks before our planned arrival in Arjeplog, we learned that our hotel had burned to the ground! We were afraid that our little weekend would have to be postponed, because Arjeplog, Sweden, isn't exactly a booming metropolis with tons of hotels from which to choose. Luckily, there was another hotel in town, which turned out to be even more convenient to the things we wanted to see.
