G’day! Andrew here finally beginning to document some stories from this amazing place. As a rookie traveller, I have found Dhaka to be incredible in so many ways. We have quickly learned that this is a place of contrasts and in just over a week have never been so challenged and excited in so many ways.
We arrived early Monday 4th August to a place that completely busted open our preconceptions. We were greeted by customs officials who were completely disinterested in us (hooray at 2:00am in the morning!) and name plate-carrying hotel workers who were more than happy to ‘help’ us find our way around (for Tk100).
Thankfully we were met and collected by school staff and whisked off to our brand spanking new apartment. It is massive. Three bedrooms, four bathrooms (???) and situated in a quiet part of town. We quickly found out that this quietness, whilst being slightly apart from the chaos that is classic Dhaka, will be somewhat of a haven where it will be easy to relax. We were rather amused at the planning of the apartment though – fridge in the dining room, washing machine in the living room, and the oven situated in the kitchen so that about a third of the cupboards are blocked. Hmmmm…..
The reality is that this is a Third World country and we are living an exceptional life here. We will not have to face the hardships that we see every day, in fact looking out from one of our balconies we can see straight into a family’s plot where a couple of sheets of corrugated iron and tarpaulins are the only shelter. They live in the weather (we’re at the end of the rainy season) – how dare I even think about whinging…
We are lucky and we rejoice in that. We already have been meeting some amazing people from our school and the community and can’t wait to keep learning.
