In my photo/travel journal "Our Summer in Australia and New Zealand" (see marshallpublications.com)and my previous report I extolled the virtues of staying at an Australian homestead such as Avalanche. A recent news note about Austalia's wombat made me recall our very lucky experience at the Biddle's 2000 acre spread.

The newspaper report refers to Australia's Treasury Secretary spending five weeks at a wildlife refuge caring for the endangered Wombat. It reports that only 115 Wombats remain in the wild. That's why we were so fortunate. What follows is from my journal:

"..."Frank was getting us ready to go 'spotting'. Dresing warmly, we piled into the Rover...Frank leaning out the window with a high beam hand-held spotlight...we had a mgnificent encounter with a (rare) wombat...once spotted lumbered his way casually towards the truck as his burrow was between us and him."

"The Wombat, also a marsupial, has its pouch on its back to prevent dirt getting in while it burrows. A GREAT SIGHTING."

And dear reader another reason for visiting a homestead is one of my top five recommended things to do in Australia.
