About 15 years ago Faye and Frank Biddle decided to open their homestead to guests so they can experience life at a typical Australian ranch. The Avalanche Homestead is a 2000 acre complex about 30 miles from the Capital, Canberra and a 1000 miles from no where. The following is an excerpt from my book Our Summer in Australia and New Zealand (amazon.com)
"The Avalalche Homestead is a working ranch, running about 1500 head of sheep and 300 or so head of cattle, in addition to the usual farm animals, such as chickens, ducks, horses, turkeys, and geese. They also pay host to many wild animals, such as kangaroos, wombats, and red foxes. The complex is at the end of a 12km dirt road, and approximately 3000 feet above sea level."
The Biddles added accomodations for about 4 couples, in Aussi speak, we are Jackaroos. Fortunately, it being mid-week and off season, their winter, we were they only guests and got Faye and Frank's full hospitality; and grand it was. I'll cover more in subsequent postings.
