Excerpted from my book Our Summer In Estonia (see Amazon.com)
"Opening in February 2006, KUMU, the Art Museum of Estonia, gave the nation for the first time in nearly one-hundred years, a dedicated fine arts museum."
KUMU was designed by the Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavouri who won an international design competition. With over 20,000 square meters of floor space it represents a major cutural committment considering the small size of Estonia and speaks loudly about breaking away from the hidebound, bureaucratic, heavy-handed recent past, a Soviet period where art was submissive to state propoganda requirements.
You will not be disappointed and could easily spend an entire day at this wonderful example of freedom and art expression.
