I've been in Bali a couple days now and I can definitely see why people sometimes just don't leave. Bali is the type of place where you can honestly spend weeks in and still have things to do, and never be bored. One of the first things I did when I got here was scout around looking for a surf school. There are TONS on the island, some a lot more expensive (relatively!) than others. I lucked out and found one where a 3 day class (2 hours a day) was less than $60! Today was day 2 and I think I may be in love. My first class I was able to stand up after only a few tries and today I started catching some bigger waves and maneuvering a bit more. There's a difference between catching a wave when it's "green" (meaning, it hasn't broken yet) and catching it when it's "white" and breaking. Getting the timing to catch it when it's green is so hard, but when you do, it feels amazing! You get so much more speed and you feel yourself ON the wave as opposed to getting pushed by the wave. I'm sure there's some techincal jargon for this, but I don't know it!
At first I thought I was a surfing phenomenon when I was able to stand up after only a few tries, but after talking to some actual surfers I realized it was because I had started on probably the longest board they had at the shop! haha. Basically, a longer board is sturdier and it's easier for beginners to learn on that. The shorter the board, the harder it is to balance, but when your good you can do really cool tricks on a shorter board. Tomorrow is my last official lesson, so I think I am gonna try a shorter board and see what happens. I don't leave Bali till Saturday night, so I'll probably go surfing again on Saturday. It's seriously addicting and I wish I could spend a month here just learning how to surf! I'll guess I'll have to save it for my next big trip!
Other than that, Bali has been great! I've met a bunch of people here and there, but nothing like in Thailand or Malaysia. Still a lot of fun though and I'm really enjoying being able to do what I want, when I want. The nightlife here is as you would imagine and I think tomorrow will probably be the night to go out since it's a Friday.
Oh, I suppose I should explain what the headline of this post is about! I mentioned how in KL, a couple of girls asked me if they could get their picture taken with me, and the same thing happened AGAIN! Except this time, it was a group of around 8 teenagers, guys and girls. I was just sitting on the beach, and they came up to me and started taking SO many pictures! There actually was a rotation going on of people and cameras, it was hilarious! I kinda have a tan now, so I really didn't think I still looked that "foreign" but I guess I do! Ladies...if you want your ego stroked, simply travel to southeast asia!
I'm going to call it an early evening tonight, I need some energy for surfing tomorrow!
