Lundy

I stopped in Ilfracombe yesterday so I could get the ferry out to Lundy today. Makes me think of the shipping forecast. I'm thinking Lundy, Fastnet, Bristol Channel... is that right? Lundy Island is beautiful, especially in the sun. I sat for ages by the ruined battery, just watching the Atlantic waves crash against the rocks of Lundy's western cliffs, creating these swathes of foam spread in a wide white arc across the rocky reef. Lundy is only about one square mile in area and flat, but the cliffs are hugely dramatic and there's something deliciously Frenchman's Creek about all those inlets and cliffs and history of smuggling and wrecks in the coves; and there being only about 25 inhabitants, 1 shop and 1 pub, it's got a promise of wildness and isolation about it. Which admittedly is slightly compromised by the disgorging on to the jetty of 150 day trippers each time. But hidden down in the ruined battery I only saw one or two of them, and then it was just me and the rocks and the sea and the ghosts of the wrecked and the smugglers.
